Chinese New Year

Last week we learned a little about Chinese New Year. We had a few parents come in to read us parts of a book and taught us some of the traditions and symbols for the Chinese New Year. This year was the Year of the Dragon.

We colored Dragon masks and had a small "parade". We ended with some {bubble wrap} firecrackers and chocolate coins.

Where did January Go?

Here are our balloons we made stating our 'HIGH Hopes for 2012.' Each child wrote and illustrated something they would like to do this year.

The month of January is whizzing past! We are off to a strong start for this new year. I am including a few pictures from the month of January. {I have been without a computer at home for a little over a week so I am in "catch up" mode.}
Here we are working on patterning. We can pattern in a variety of different ways!
We are also practicing telling time to the hour. Here we are exploring the clocks. Can your child locate the hour and minute hand? Count how many clocks are in your house? Digital/Analog?

In our literacy centers we are working with all of the sight words we know are we are making words with Play-doh.
In gym, the kids did some bowling. They sure were pumped!
MUG PARTY
On Friday we celebrated winter with a "Mug Party". Thanks to all the parents who sent in mugs & treats!

Cookies+ donut holes+ hot cocoa+ great stories= lots of fun for a Friday morning!

Fun Festivities

This past week we enjoyed listening to a variety of versions of the Gingerbread man. The kids did a great job comparing and contrasting the different aspects of each story. At the end of the week the kids did some taste testing. They had to follow the difficult direction of taking only one bite. Then we graphed how many kids took a bit of the leg, the arm, or the head.

All in all it was a fun and tasty way to discuss the different books!

Teen Numbers- in a fun format

A colleague of mine shared these awesome Youtube links with me concerning teen numbers. Typically, these can be tricky numbers for the students to remember. However, with the help of these fun little jingles, our students seem to be remembering them well. I thought you might enjoy listening to them with your child.

Turkey Trot

Last week, before we headed out for the Thanksgiving break, some of the kids from our class participated in the Turkey Trot. I was so proud of the group of kids that ran the half-mile course in the cold AND also so proud of the good sportsmanship and support that the students gave as they cheered on their classmates. Here are a few pictures of the fun!

The winner from the kindergarten classes even came from our class. Here he is with the turkey he won!
Afterward we came back to class to make our "turkey cookies" before we headed home for the break.

Mmmm! Look at these delish turkey cookies!

I hope your break was full of wonderful memories and relaxation!
